This summer has felt pretty brutal in the South, with scorching temperatures and still more hot days ahead. Out at the barn, we were getting so much mold and mildew growing each week as humidity seemed to hover stagnant in the tack room. It left its calling card with a fuzz of mold left behind on what is arguably very expensive leather (aka, our saddles).
So the barn manager ordered a small single-room dehumidifier, and it's exactly as you imagined. Immediately the humidity cut down in the room drastically, no more moldy fuzz left behind on the saddles, and it's astonishing how quickly this thing seems to pull the water out of thin air (a practical magician, one might say).
So even though we're technically nearing fall, the temperatures and humidity sure don't feel like it, so here's a few single-room dehumidifiers you might want to add to your list of necessities no matter the season. You can use it in a small bathroom, bedroom, closet, RV, crawl space or other humid area where you don't want mold or mildew to grow.
How dehumidifiers actually work
Think of a dehumidifier as a moisture vacuum that literally pulls water out of the air. Most use one of two methods: compressor technology (like a mini air conditioner that condenses water vapor) or thermoelectric Peltier technology (which uses temperature differences to extract moisture). The humid air gets drawn in, the moisture gets separated and collected in a tank, and drier air gets pushed back out. The result? Less mold, fewer musty odors, and that sticky, oppressive feeling in the air disappears.
